Yoga and Weight Loss: YogaBurn: A Review (By Yaz Rooney)

Can Yoga Contribute to Weight Loss?

Absolutely it can! Born in Northern India almost 6,000 years ago, yoga is proven to contribute to weight loss. A 2016 study (reported in the Complementary Therapies in Medicine journal) suggests that yoga exercises, when performed at a much faster pace than usual, can compete with aerobic exercise when it comes to fat-burning. A subsequent study done in 2017 took a closer look at the fat-burning process and concluded that the secret lay in the fast transitions from one pose to another, rather than the traditional ‘hold’ of the stretches that are typical of the yoga routine. In other words, the full health benefits of yoga as seen in Part 1 of my yoga series can be experienced whilst also losing weight.

Yoga Burn for Weight Loss

One very successful yoga weight loss regime is the Yoga Burn Program in which Zoe Bray-Cotton, a certified yoga instructor, personal trainer and female fitness expert, arranges specific yoga exercises into a system that she calls Dynamic Sequencing. Dynamic Sequencing teaches you how to perform each movement, and at the moment your body adapts to the movements, increases the challenge. This sequencing helps you to burn fat, tone your muscles beautifully, and build a  body that looks and feels wonderful.

The unique 3 phase program (I’ll tell you more about that below) comprises a series of different 45 minute videos that keep you excited and engaged in your workout (you won’t get bored!) The videos can be watched, and exercises done, anytime, anywhere. You’ll experience great benefits when you complete three 45 minute videos a week, and if you’re up for it, you’ll get the chance to complete a highly recommended bonus video lesson too, one that has positive effects on your confidence levels and your sense of well-being.  Yoga Burn: Three Phase Dynamic Sequencing Program

Phase 1: Foundational Flow

This phase builds a solid yoga foundation and benefits beginners through to advanced yoga students. The first four weeks instructs beginners in adopting a strong yoga practice, executing proper form and developing an important relationship between mind and body. Advanced students will gain great rewards from the dynamic sequences.  This important foundation course is critical to progressing through the next two phases safely and effectively.

Phase 2: Transitional Flow

In Phase 2, you will blend the sequences learned in Phase 1 into a smooth flow that burns calories and increases your heart rate. Each video in Phase 2 focuses on large muscles groups: Upper body, Lower Body, and Core and they teach you to move smoothly and effectively through the sequences, while training your mind to focus only on this moment.

Phase 3: Mastery Flow

In this phase, you will be energized and have the opportunity to maximize weight loss. With everything you’ve learned, the sequences are now performed with an intensity that speeds up your metabolism and transforms your body in ways you may have never imagined possible with yoga!

These videos are slightly different than the previous videos. You’ll experience more repetition of each pose to really encourage muscles to work hard. You will also move through a combination of upper and lower body compound movements. These are designed to get the most done in the shortest amount of time, and the muscles targeted will become toned, as your body starts to take beautiful shape.
