Why Juicing Is A Key Part Of An Anti-Cancer Diet … And How Max Gerson Blazed The Trail

The best way to extract huge amounts of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and phytonutrients from fruits and vegetables, and get them into your body fast, is through juicing! Cancer patients on the Gerson Therapy drink 12-13 juices per day, but I drink 6 large glasses of carrot, beetroot and ginger juice each day which adds up to around 1.5 litres: the generally accepted minimum quantity to be effective for cancer patients. Although organic fruit and vegetables are more expensive than their conventionally-grown counterparts, you should, if you can afford it, try to use them in your juices as organic fruit and vegetables are richer in essential nutrients than non-organic varieties. For instance, Amylase is a digestive enzyme that acts on starch in food, breaking it down into smaller carbohydrate molecules, and organic carrots have been shown to have double the amount of Amylase enzyme activity than non-organic carrots.

Juicing is not only a wise dietary decision if you wish to try and prevent cancer but also if you want to help heal it naturally without conventional treatment or you have undergone chemotherapy/radiation treatment and need your body’s immune system to recover fast! During chemotherapy and radiation, your body is bombarded with free radicals (i.e. unstable molecules) which damage DNA (i.e. cellular blueprints that contain vital instructions) and mitochondria (i.e. the energy factories in your cells). If during or after chemotherapy/radiation treatment, patients consume highly processed foods which have virtually zero nutrition and are also packed with hormones, chemicals, GMO residues and other toxins, the immune system, so vital in healing any chronic disease, simply doesn’t get the chance to do its job. However, if you want to boost your immune system so that it can neutralise those free radicals and inhibit cancer growth and metastasis, you should eat real, whole living foods and this is where juicing from organic produce plays a vital role.

The best juices for chemotherapy/radiation patients are undoubtedly those produced from vegetables as they are anti-mugenic in that they help the body fight cancer mutation and they also contain antioxidants that mitigate the free radical damage done by these treatments. According to the ‘The Little Juicing Book: For Those On The Gerson Therapy’, ‘The basic idea of the Gerson Therapy is to stimulate the body’s own defences, the immune system, to do what it normally does in a healthy body, namely to destroy and eliminate the cancer cells which we all produce.’ There is a lot more to the Gerson protocol than only organic juicing, which I’ll talk about in a separate post, but cancer patients consume 8 carrot and apple juices, 4 green juices and 1 orange or grapefruit juice daily. Carrots are particularly important in the Gerson juicing protocol as they have a powerful detoxifying effect on the body, and deliver an abundance of vitamins and minerals to rebuild cells as well as the enzymes to help the body absorb them. Each patient consumes juice from a minimum of 40lbs (about 18kg) of organic carrots weekly, and 6-8 ounces of both carrots and apples will produce around 8 fluid ounces of juice. NB: 8 ounces = 227g and 8 fluid ounces = 225ml (1 of 13 drinks daily).

Apples are also anti-toxic and can reactivate the beneficial bacteria in the intestines. Since 70%-80% of the body’s immune system is located in the gut flora in the lower gastro-intestinal tract, the role of apples in stimulating that healthy bacteria is crucial to recovery. Apples also prevent the growth of disease-producing bacteria in the gut as they contain  both malic and tartaric acids. The best apples for cancer patients are tart apples like Granny Smiths, Bramleys and Pippins as they are low in sugar and, as we know, cancer cells thrive on glucose, consuming 15 times more than healthy cells. You should also make sure they’re fresh as mouldy apples might contain the mycotoxin, patulin. Each patient consumes juice from a minimum of 32lbs (about 14.5kg) of organic tart apples weekly.

Green juices are also vital in the Gerson protocol and a variety of leaves are used to produce them. Lettuce is an extremely important healing food as it contains 90%-95% organic water, a multitude of vitamins and the most silicon of any vegetable which is vital in healing connective tissues. The best lettuce, according to the Gerson protocol, is Cos and Green or Red Batavias as they contain the most chlorophyll, whereas Iceberg  contains hardly any at all. Watercress is also an excellent salad vegetable to juice but should be washed well to ensure it is free of any parasites and stored in the refrigerator with its leaves (not stems) in water to keep it fresh.  Other green veggies used in Gerson juicing include swiss chard, chicory, beetroot leavesgreen pepperred cabbage and apples as a natural sweetener. The leaves make up 50% of the juice while apples make up the remaining 50%. The protocol cautions that these green juices should be consumed immediately otherwise the vital live enzymes will be destroyed.

There are a lot of mistaken beliefs about juicing which I’d like to talk about here. Firstly, some people think that juice can only be fully nutritious if it’s drunk fresh i.e. immediately. Imagine trying to consume a minimum of 6 large glasses of juice straight after preparing them, let alone 13! Clearly, the only ‘fresh’ juice is the first one or two of the day, but as long as it’s refrigerated, your juice will keep perfectly well throughout the day and you’ll still gain great nutritional value at the day’s end. Simply store it in air tight glass bottles or mason jars, leave as little air as possible at the top and keep it in the fridge. A second fallacy is that high-speed juicing creates a great amount of heat which destroys many of the nutrients in the juice. However, the truth is that high-speed juicers don’t generate that amount of damaging heat and so enzyme activity is still very high in juices from all different types of juicing machines, whether they’re high speed masticating ones or centrifugal juicers. A third misconception is that store-purchased juice is as nutritious as the freshly-made variety. If it’s pasteurised, this is certainly not true as pasteurisation destroys the valuable nutrients, but if it’s same-day-produced and unpasteurised, then that is a good replacement. And finally, a little tip to save some money! When I’ve finished putting my vegetables through the juicer on the first run, I take out the pulp, which will still be very moist, and put it through again. This gives me an extra cup of fresh juice.

When investing in a juicer, you should consider certain factors like how much juice it can actually extract, how durable it is and how easy it is to clean as some with quite a few moving parts can take an absolute age to do so. Of course, cost is important too, but I believe that if you want to fight cancer and are about to start a hardcore daily juicing routine, this is one product that really does deserve your investment.

My product recommendation is the Bosch MES3500 Juicer. Straight after my lymph node surgery in February 2016, my wife and I researched the multitude of juicers on the market and went out to buy the Bosch MES3500 Blue. I’ve used it virtually every day since then for all my juicing needs and, over two years later, it’s been trouble-free and is still going strong. It has a powerful 700-watt motor with one speed for hard fruit and another for soft fruit which are easily able to juice my favourite carrots, beetroot, celery, apples and citrus fruits, and shred the fresh ginger that I often add to my juice. It’s stainless steel microsieve is also designed for optimum juice extraction and the extra large filling tube is really useful too as there’s no need to pre-cut the fruit and vegetables that you put into it. The Bosch MES3500 Juicer also has a SafetyStop feature which offers complete protection against injury as the motor stops immediately if the lid is opened during operation.

Whatever juicer you decide to buy, I’m sure that it’ll play a vital role in any anti-cancer diet that you follow and I wish you well with your purchase.
